Is there a shortage of building materials in Australia?

If you are considering building or renovating a home in Australia, you might be waiting a while. It’s no secret there is a nationwide shortage of building materials in Australia. Not only are construction sites in high demand, but builders and developers have been running out of materials to complete the jobs, leaving homeowners extremely frustrated.

Since Australians have been unable to travel due to Covid, it seems more and more people are investing in their homes and beginning renovation projects. It is currently hard to find good builders or contractors who are available to start construction projects. The price of construction materials has also skyrocketed in the last year, and many homeowners are struggling to afford the building materials that they need to complete their project.

We are finding many homeowners are deciding to ‘hold off’ on their renovation plans in the hope that prices will come down as the industry gradually returns to normal. But the reality is the price increases are here to stay. The price of materials is unlikely to go backwards any time soon. The advice we are giving our clients is to lock in a fixed price contract while you can. It’s then up to the builder to source the materials in a timely manner.

Choosing a builder:

Sadly, the shortage of building materials and their increase in price means a lot of new and inexperienced builders are at risk of going bust. So, it’s more important than ever to choose a reputable builder who has been in the game long enough to know how to stay ahead of the curve. Do your due diligence and research your builder, and make sure you secure a fixed price contract.
