Smart storage solutions for your Queenslander home renovation

It’s no secret that traditional Queenslander homes don’t have the best storage. From awkwardly placed cupboards to miniscule built-in-robes, they don’t offer a whole lot of space. If you’re renovating your Queenslander home, chances are you will need more storage solutions throughout the home. Whether you are completing a renovation on the smaller scale, or you are completely rebuilding some sections, there are always options for you to implement.

Bedroom storage

In a bedroom renovation, the most common storage solution is renovating or building new robes. Depending on the size of the bedroom, there are multiple different options you can work with. Your first and most simple option is building some simple built in robes, with basic shelving and hanging racks. Most of these will have multiple hanging rails, with storage space overhead to store things like suitcases. If you are looking for a more comprehensive storage solution, and you know you need a good amount of clothes storage, you can opt to have a custom-built robe that includes drawers, shelving, and hanging to your liking. This is a great option as you can customise your shelving, hanging, and drawer ratio to how you like to store your items.

Another common option when renovating a Queenslander home is turning a smaller side bedroom into a walk-in-robe. Old Queenslander homes are known for boasting awkward sized rooms, and they serve as great bedroom storage. Building a walk-in-robe is also extremely customisable depending on your storage needs. Whether you simply wish to keep your chest of drawers and hanging racks out of site, or get custom storage built in, the options are endless.

If none of these options are relevant and you are completing a smaller scale renovation, you can always investigate smart storage solutions such as underbed storage or multi-functioning stand-alone cupboards or chest of drawers. One benefit of Queenslanders is their high ceiling height, which means you can get away with larger stand-alone furniture if needed.

Living room storage

If you are renovating your Queenslander for you and your family, there’s a high chance that you will be needing space to store the endless school bags, kid shoes, and general clutter. Building a mud room or kids storage underneath the stairs is a fantastic option for tucked away smart storage. This gives you an area where you can organise the kids clutter and items, while keeping it out of sight. This area under the stairs is generally kept empty anyway, so you will not be compromising other areas by incorporating this addition.

Another option for your living room is custom cabinetry. This doesn’t only extend itself to building bedroom robes, but can also be a fantastic way to add extra storage to your living areas. One great way to do this is to build a multi-use unit in your living room. This could be a full TV unit with combined storage, or something simple on the side such as this image below. These are fantastic to store things such as DVD’s, games, blankets, extra pillows, and remotes.

Kitchen storage

Similarly to building a walk-in-robe, smaller rooms next to the kitchen make a great walk-in pantry or butler’s pantry. These can be made small enough that there is just enough space for you to step inside, or large enough for you to completely enter the room. The overall size of these is completely up to you and your storage needs. Building a pantry also means you get to decide on what kind of storage inside suits your homes needs best. You can opt for something as simple as basic shelving, or if your budget and the size of the room allows it, you can also get drawers and more comprehensive storage built. This will all depend on the size of your home, and also the size of your family (and how much food they eat!).
