There’s something special about a really great bathroom. When we find ourselves in a beautiful bathroom, it’s easy to feel calm, happy, and a little bit fancy. In fact, it’s often our clients’ most popular space to renovate because they can get as creative as they’d like. It’s no secret that we’ve been known to create some pretty spectacular bathrooms (if we do say so ourselves…), which is why we wanted to put together our top tips for renovating your bathroom.
1) Go over the basic questions before you start
Ask yourself the dull questions before you even begin moodboarding or falling in love with a bathroom design you want to copy. You may not even realize these questions impact your bathroom needs, but they truly do! Before beginning, any designer worth employing would run these by their clients. Prepare your responses, consult with your designer, and then start compiling inspiration images. Some of these questions include:
Fleshing out your answers will help create the dream space that suits your lifestyle.
2) Develop a bathroom layout
So you’ve got an idea of what type of bathroom works for you, now it’s time to come up with a layout. Before you think about the aesthetics of your bathroom remodel, you have to nail down the layout. Depending on the shape and size of the area you have to work with, there are countless variations in bathroom layout. We often advise our clients to consider keeping the existing layout. This is because rearranging plumbing fixtures and walls can quickly drive the cost of your bathroom up, so if you can avoid it, we recommend you do!
I often advise clients to consider keeping their existing layout. If they like the general position of tub/shower, sink, and toilet and can go on living with that general layout, then I say go for it!
3) Think about ventilation
When designing a bathroom, it’s easy to forget about ventilation. After all, the last thing that you want to be thinking about when you’re trying to relax in your beautiful bathroom is a small fan above your head. However, ventilation is super important in bathrooms, which is why it’s worth paying extra attention to this detail. All bathrooms need excellent ventilation to keep occupants in good health and prevent mold from growing. Mold spells big problems for bathrooms and, if left untreated, can stain and do expensive damage, especially in hidden areas.
4) Add a touch of luxury
When you’re thinking about renovating your bathroom, you might want to add in a few extras to make your space special. A few supplemental bathroom features will increase your home’s value. Adding these during a remodel is a perfect time, as it will cause less disruption than doing it later. Some of these extra features include heated floors and towel rails, or wall-mounted features. It’s also at this stage that you can really go all in on the aesthetics. Play with shapes and colours with patterned tiles, and focus on durable high-quality materials to complete the look!
